A Speldhurst woman and retired senior police officer says she has found the perfect recession-proof career and is urging other people to follow in her footsteps.

Karen Young joined Utility Warehouse five years ago when she was looking for a fresh challenge and an additional income stream that would finance her children at university and hasn't looked back since.

The mother of two now has over 120 people in her team and has been promoted to Group Director. The icing on the cake came when she was given the keys to a new Mini with the company's striking purple and yellow branding. She also won a six-star cruise for her outstanding performance and has earned share-options in the company plus other bonuses along the way.

Karen's work at Utility Warehouse involves meeting with people and helping them to save money on their electricity, gas, internet and telephone bills.

She said: “I was looking for something different after retiring from the police and was attracted by the opportunity to work from home and not having to commute to London.   Fortunately I didn’t need to have a sales background or know anything about utilities as the company provides free training locally and there is a great support network with other local Authorised Distributors.   It's great to be helping people save money on their bills and I love the fact that my customers recommend me to their family and friends so I know that they are very happy with the services”.

“Utility Warehouse is perfect for me as I can work when I want and put in as much effort as I wish. I especially enjoy helping other people to start up their own Utility Warehouse businesses and there is a great sense of team-work.  I was particularly pleased to be able to help the Hospice in the Weald set up their own Utility Warehouse business so that its supporters can save money and help the Hospice at the same time”

“This is a business that isn't affected by the recession as everyone needs heating, electricity and a phone and everyone wants the best deal they can get. The best part is that I receive an ongoing residual income that grows every month.  So even when my children have left university I am sure that I’ll find new ways to spend the money!”

‘Utility Warehouse’, the operating name of Telecom Plus plc, the  current Financial Times Company of the Year, provides an opportunity for ordinary people and community groups to earn an ongoing residual income through helping others to save money on their household or business bills. To be an Authorised Distributor for Utility Warehouse you need to be over 18, be a good communicator and enjoy helping others, as well as meeting new people.  There is unlimited free training and no sales experience is required.

Most distributors begin part-time, working around five hours per week, so that they can fit it around their ‘day-job’ but once their income builds and they no longer have to work full time it gives them the freedom to devote time to building a substantial income if they wish or simply allows them more time to pursue hobbies and other interests. Distributors come from all walks of life and there is no upper age limit.
